Macro- and micro-structure characteristics of advanced materials have been becoming a more and more useful research tool. However, incessant technological progress requires still new investigation concepts and experimental techniques. There are new application horizons open before one of the most sophisticated yet not sufficiently used material characteristics - like space arrangement (crystallographic texture), internal stresses or morphological relationships. Here belong inhomogeneous structures, like functionally graded materials characterized by spatial irregularity of composition and/or microstructure – which can ensure the required control over specific thermal, structural and functional properties.
In recent years, noticeable advancements have been made in experimental as well as theoretical methods in the above mentioned field. It was reflected during the 1st SOTAMA-FGM (Symposium on Texture and Microstructure Analysis of Functionally Graded Materials) held in Cracow in 2004. It is organizers' intention was to turn the 2nd Symposium of this kind held also in Cracow, September 26-28, 2007 termed SOTAMA’2007 into a real, integrated forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences among highly interdisciplinary scientists and engineers from universities, industry and government laboratories.
